Whitney Houston - All The Man That I Need
Lyrics & Visuals
When we get into the chorus of the song we hear Whitney sing "He gives me love" when she sings this she holds both hands to her heart, When she then goes on to say "More love than ive ever seen" she holds out her arms wide like she's receiving something large. Houston then goes onto sing "He holds me close, and wont let go" when she sings this she is holding herself tightly.
Music & Visuals
As this song is a slow song this camera is very relaxed and calm whilst filming Miss Houston as she walks around the room singing. In this video Whitney Houston is seen a lot of the time in front of glass letting in light this light illuminates Whitney making her look angelic, also at 35 seconds into the video she has her head tilted back with her hair being illuminated which could suggest her innocence and also could resemble a halo. some time after this there is a close up on her face, you can see a cross on her ear ring which also relates to her being an angel.
Genre Characteristics
The genre of this song is R&B/Soul you can see one characteristic of a R&B video in this video as there is an attractive female singing. In this video there is a live performance at the end Miss Houston is singing with a choir behind her this particular situation can again relate to the angelic Whitney we saw earlier in the video.
Artists Close Up/Label
Whitney Houston is strongly featured throughout the video being the only person you see for the majority of it, only at the end is there other people featured. There are a number of close ups on her face throughout the video also.
Star Image
In this video we see Whitney Houston wearing a turtleneck with her initials WH embroidered on it, Whitney Houston is the only person we see for the majority of the video this ensures the viewer knows who the star is here, also this particular song had been recorded few times before but failed to make a real impact on the billboard charts, Whitney could have stood alone in this particular video to show she is capable of making hits on her own.
Voyeurism/Looking/Gaze.
There is no real Voyeurism in this video Whitney is dressed in a tutleneck which covers her whole upper body body but her head and hands, the only hint of voyuerism in this video is the fact that Whitney was an attractive female but other than that there is not much to comment on.
Intertextuality

Kirko Bangz - Drank In My Cup
Music & Lyrics
The very first lyric to the song is "I done came down, hold up" this opening links with the video straight away as this saying, which is used very often by rappers from Houston simply means 'I got the hottest car around' the video opens by showing the front logo on the car in a close up and then cuts to the rims on the car, the car is then shown turning a corner and driving straight towards the camera. The second lyric in this song "grip the grain, roll up" refers to him grabbing the wood grain steering wheel on his car and “rolling up” in it. At the specific time this is said you can see a shot of Kirko Bangz holding the steering wheel as he drives. Bangz then tells us "she call me when she wants a change, black diamond my pinky ring" at this point you can see him take a call with a black diamond pinky ring on his finger. "H-Town" is a term used for the city of Houston, Texas when Bangz says "H-Town" an image of the skyline appears from an high angle. "I got this drank in my cup" when Bangz sings the chorus he is in the studio with a cup presumably filled with liquor. Kirko Bangz explains this girl that wants to get with him gives him the same look every time they're together, the camera then zooms into a girl giving him a look. Towards the end Kirko Bangz says "H-Town" at this point you can see a room of people throwing up with their hands, what is known as, the sign of the horns, you can see this sign throughout the video, this particular sign has been adopted by people from Houston and to them and many others means H-Town(Houston).
Music & Visuals
The video opens when the music starts, this certain instrumental has a fading sound, when the the instruments fade so does the scence and when the beat kicks in again you get a new shot. There are a number of different shots as the drums take place in the song, after about 45 seconds claps start in the song and every time you hear a clap the shot changes, there are a few shots as this point as the claps are quite frequent.
Genre Characteristics
You can find a lot of the characteristics of a rap/hip hop video in this particular video such as cars, girls, liquor, parties, baseball caps & jewellery. In this video you can see both a studio performance as well as a live performance i think the live performance is somewhat typical the hip hop/rap genre as a lot of rappers do shows before they are signed and then tour on mixtapes and albums.
Artists Close Ups
Whilst Kirko is in the studio you can see a lot of close ups on his face this is good for the record company as the main artist is featured a lot in the video, he is represented as a common rapper from Houston in which he wears jewellery, a baseball cap, a hooded jacket, and also has a lot of tatoos which has become a popular in hip hop/rap, everybody watching knows who the main artist is.
Star Image
In the video Kirko Bangz holds the H-Town hand sign a lot, not all rappers can or do do this as they're either not from Houston or choose not too, this gives Bangz his own identity, when people see this hand sign in other places or used by other people they can be reminded of him.
Voyeurism
In this video there is a girl that comes into the video at 1:57, the clothes she is wearing are quite revealing as you can see her bra and a lot of her breasts, also you can see a lot of other girls in the video with similar dress but it seems as if this girl is the main focus.

G.O.O.D Music - Mercy
Lyrics & Visuals
The lyrics to the hook mention a Lamborghini Murcielago "Lamborghini Mercy". The video is filmed in what looks like an underground parking lot which straight away relates to the name and hook of the song. The video is shot from a low angle as if it is being shot from the window view of a Lamborghini. Also at 25 seconds of the video you can see a Lamborghini in the background. In Kanye's verse, he starts with the line "Let the suicide doors up", all Lamborghini's have suicide doors. In the last verse by 2 Chainz he exaggerates "All my cars is foreign" This again relates to the Lamborghini as it is an Italian car and 2 Chainz is a American rapper.
Music & Visuals
At the start of the video rapper 2 Chainz is hiting an imaginary drum infront of him which is in line with the beat of the music. When rapper Big Sean raps "so much hate i need an AK" he acts as if he has a AK47 in his possession and fires it.
Genre Characteristics The genre of this song is hip hop in this video you can find the basic characteristics of a hip hop video such as expensive cars, girls and jewellery. Voyeurism The girl in this particular video isn't as exposed as other girls in other hip hop videos, which could suggest this particular group of rappers are classier than others as their girls are classier. Artists Close Ups The owner of the G.O.O.D Music record label is in fact Kanye West which makes him the main artist and as the main artist he is alongside every other rapper in the video whilst they rap. Also at the start of Kanye's verse he is standing alone and then halfway into his rap the other rappers start to appear again. Star Image As the main artist, Kanye West brings his own knowledge of fashion and excellent style to the other rappers in the video as they are all dressed very similar. Kanye has had his own Louis Vuitton sneakers made and also has his own brand of Nike shoe called Nike Air Yeezy. Intertextuality There is no real intertextuality to comment on.
